God is the One who baptizes His children with the Holy Spirit and fire. In today's passage, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pilate was governor, Herod was tetrarch, his brother Philip was tetrarch of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, and Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, John preached a baptism of repentance and forgiveness of sins in the Jordan River, just as the prophet Isaiah had prophesied. John the Baptist also called the crowds coming out to be baptized, "You brood of vipers," and urged them to bear fruit worthy of repentance and share their clothing and food. He also told soldiers to be content with their pay. Some wondered if John the Baptist was the Christ, but John said he was not worthy to untie the thongs of his sandals when the mighty One came. Amen.
